Unlikable heroes can make spending an entire game as them a real chore.

As many talented developers such as Tim Schafer and Jason Rubin can attest, crafting compelling game protagonists can be tricky. While great works of fiction such as Macbeth and The Sopranos have demonstrated how morally flexible protagonists can be, developers are often too afraid to make their characters too unlikable.

On the flip side, some game heroes are just hard to root for. Anti-heroes can be conflicted over what's right or wrong, but if they demonstrate no initiative to do better, it can come off as insincere. Sometimes, the only thing that separates a game hero from the villains is the fact that players are forced to control them.

Lester the Unlikely was a puzzle platformer in which players controlled the enormous teenager in an attempt to escape a tropical island. At the start of the game, Lester is so cowardly and helpless that he can't even face measly crustacean enemies. However, as the game progresses, the youth gradually becomes more confident and strong, culminating in his transformation into a buff hero.

It was a novel concept at the time of release, but it didn't translate into good game mechanics. Instead, it made Lester the hardest to root for protagonist in all gaming.
