Director Richard Donner simultaneously filmed Superman: The Movie and Superman II. However, financial concerns caused hostility between Donner and the producers. As a result, Donner was fired and replaced with director Richard Lester for Superman II. When this happened, Donner had already filmed 75% of Superman II, so Lester re-shot most of Donner's work.

Superman: The Movie is a great superhero movie due to its compelling origins and relatively light-hearted atmosphere. The film has well-timed and well-written humor that the story uses in moderation.

Lester was known for comedy, but he sadly went somewhat overboard in the final version of Superman II. The assaults on the astronauts, the White House, and the Daily Planet contain several slapstick antics that undermine the stakes. The Donner cut deleted most of these antics, and the ones that remained felt in place with the film.
