Although Superman II was a relative critical and financial success, Lester didn't have the same reverence for Superman's character. Donner would release a cut of his version 26 years later. Several elements showed that Donner's cut was better, from certain scenes making more sense to better character development.
Superman: The Movie is a great superhero movie due to its compelling origins and relatively light-hearted atmosphere. The film has well-timed and well-written humor that the story uses in moderation.
Lester was known for comedy, but he sadly went somewhat overboard in the final version of Superman II. The assaults on the astronauts, the White House, and the Daily Planet contain several slapstick antics that undermine the stakes. The Donner cut deleted most of these antics, and the ones that remained felt in place with the film.
