With One D&D coming for the game's 50th anniversary in 2024, now is an excellent time to look at the things that the new game promises.

Announced August 18, 2022, One Dungeons & Dragons is said to be the next and definitive edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Wizards of the Coast insisted in their announcement trailer that One D&D would not be "Sixth Edition" in the traditional sense. However, players have heard that claim before, during the early D&D Next playtest phase of the Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition.

9/9 D&D Beyond Is The Most Important Part Of The New Game

For better or for worse, since 1974, the consistent sources of worldbuilding inspiration for Dungeons & Dragons were a combination of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings world and the sword-and-sandals Dying Earth and Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser series. These inspired Gygax & Arneson and created the worlds of Greyhawk and Blackmoor, the first campaign settings of D&D.

Stepping beyond these early sources is critical to the game's continued success. Works like Perdido Street Station and Should We Drown In Feathered Sleep took fantasy to undreamt-of places when D&D launched in the '70s.
