Elder Scrolls Online has featured several major expansions, exploring some of the most famous locations and stories in the franchise's long history.

With the latest Elder Scrolls Online expansion, High Isle, set to release in June 2022, many of the game's fans have started reflecting upon the developing legacy of the MMORPG. A groundbreaking endeavor for the Elder Scrolls franchise, ESO places the player in the shoes of a Second Era inhabitant of Tamriel during the Interregnum: a bloody period of civil strife during which no person had firm control of the Ruby Throne.

With a total of five expansions currently out — Morrowind, Summerset, Elsweyr, Greymoor, and Blackwood, in chronological order of release — there is plenty of material for new ESO players to dig their teeth into. While each offers an enjoyable experience with a unique perspective on one of Tamriel's iconic areas, players have not met all of them with universal praise. A pecking order among these five projects has emerged, with a couple of ESO's expansions separating themselves from the rest of the pack.

5 Morrowind Succeeds Despite Being A Slight Disappointment

Release date: May 22, 2017 (PC, Mac), June 6, 2017 (Xbox One, PS4)

The Elder Scrolls franchise had explored almost every known location on the core continent of Tamriel. Still, before the release of 2018's Summerset expansion, the franchise had not visited the home of the High Elves since The Elder Scrolls: Arena. This DLC allows the player to journey into Summerset Isles as part of the High Elf Queen's attempt to open the region's borders, exposing players to the vibrant flora and fauna that characterize the area. In terms of gameplay, Summerset features a hardy solo questline centered around the Queen's efforts and a skill tree focusing on the abilities of the mysterious Psijic Order.

For longtime Elder Scrolls fans, the lore of this DLC is what truly separates it from its contemporaries. The Summerset Isles was one of the most intriguing unplayable areas in the series for decades, especially after the intense focus on the Aldmeri Dominion in Skyrim's narrative, so for players to be made part of the opening of the gigantic region's borders is a huge treat. Additionally, the Psijic Order, an ultra-mysterious group of mages that disappeared without a trace in the early-Fourth Era, returned for an appearance in the Summerset expansion. All in all, the lore of this beautiful expansion and its exciting additions to the title's gameplay and beautiful scenery make it one of The Elder Scrolls Online's best features.
