Two decades later, the original Law & Order series is still going strong: it was canceled for a short time but was recently revived for a new season. Additionally, the franchise has expanded into seven spinoffs and counting. Some of these spin-offs have become cult classics in their own right, but some of them slightly missed their mark.
SVU has been on the air nearly as long as the original series, and it's easy to see why. The characters are some of the most compelling in the franchise, with seamless partnerships and well-developed backstories. Many cases are inspired by true stories and tackle topical issues about victims' rights and the difficulties of processing certain kinds of violent offenders.
At the helm of the series is Detective Olivia Benson, one of the longest-standing detectives in the franchise. Mariska Hargitay has even won a Daytime Emmy for her portrayal of the expertly written detective, who forms close personal bonds with some of the victims she helps.
