Here's what we know about the sequel to Blizzard's wildly popular team shooter, which faded into the background after its 2019 announcement.

Overwatch 2 feels like Schrodinger's FPS at the moment. The game was announced at BlizzCon 2019, complete with one of Blizzard's trademark trailers that double as short films.

Anticipation for the game was hindered from the start following the controversy surrounding Blizzard's stance on Hong Kong. The developer was radio silent about the game in 2020. Here's what we do know about Overwatch 2 at the moment.

What's New?

In a December developer update, Jeff Kaplan confirmed that Overwatch 2 would be shown at BlizzConline 2021, which will take place between February 19-20. What that means in practice is anyone's guess, but you would think it would be more substantial than another trailer, given the void of information since 2019.

While there's a distinct possibility the game will have a big showing at BlizzConline, fans would be setting themselves up for disappointment if they expected a concrete 2021 release date. The volume of job postings for positions on the Overwatch team has helped fuel rumors that development is sluggish. It may be some time before the game hits the market. As frustrating as a TBA release date is, it's preferable to the alternative.
